At the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UHN, we are committed to advancing knowledge and creating new standards of care and practice through clinical trials.

Our team has been actively involved in leading and participating in clinical trials: from local ones, focused on pioneering new surgical techniques, to multi-institutional and multi-national collaborative trials. Some of the examples of the trials we’ve been involved in include evaluating the role of transoral robotic surgery, image-guided surgery with intra-operative imaging and cone-beam CT scanning, active surveillance for thyroid cancer, the use of PET imaging for evaluation of disease after radiotherapy, and the use of new microvascular reconstructive procedures for airway reconstruction.

We have also been actively working with our radiation oncology and medical oncology colleagues on clinical trials evaluating de-intensification of radiation for low-risk oropharyngeal cancers as well as evaluating novel drug agents, such as immunotherapy, in the pre-operative setting.
